New Phylogenetic Trees!

tyler rhodes evolution phylogenetic tree extendedtyler-rhodes-evolution-phylogenetic-tree-extended-app.

Here are my extended trees with brand new creatures! I’ve done a view artworks myself referencing some of these newer creatures, but it took me until now to tie them all together. Mostly I took the existing tree, but started new lineages beginning where the other trees ended, effectively creating 12 generations instead of 6 in those lines. The red circle denotes a separate lineage from that point in another offshoot, which you can see in the second image there.

Evolution Animation in One Image

Tyler-Rhodes-Evolution!-Patrick-Henry-School-of-Science-slitscan

Using the power of Slit-scanning, I’ve condensed my evolution animation into one single image! This is accomplished by feeding the video past a single row of pixels, which is then played out as this image as the video moves past it. Can you recognize any specific parts?

Linocut!

IMG_025 linocut-creature

Last Wednesday I carried out my evolution simulation at a Lunchbreak Science seminar at the Science Museum of Virginia, here in Richmond. As everything was wrapping up, I held a small raffle for some prints I made from a linocut block that I had fashioned (based on one of my favorite critters) which you can see above!

Biomorphs

http://physics.syr.edu/courses/mirror/biomorph/

In reference to the “biomorphs” from Richard Dawkins “The Blind Watchmaker,” I found a site that allows you to evolve the weirdly shapes critters on your own! This more or less mirrors exactly how I get my drawings, so start mashing some squares and see what you can come up with! (at first the biomorphs will be very small, so just keep clicking until you start to see something you like and then go for it.)

Watercolors!

ian-and-ruthIMG_4330ruthie-paintian-paint

Here are some watercolor paintings I did for my friends Ruthie and Ian Edwards, based off of their original creature drawings. The drawings they made are from about a year ago when I had my animation playing at the Main Street Library here in Richmond, Virginia, and I managed to convince them to doodle some critters for me!

More 3-d Creatures!

IMG_059brugo-tyler-barker

Another 3-d creature this time(one of my favorites!) from Mr.Barker over at Polycount. I asked him if that was the mouth at the bottom there, and what those things were on the side of the head, and he said that…

Yeah that’s his mouth. The things on the side of his head are little gill like structures for taking in air since I imagined his mouth would be suctioned to the ground a lot of the time.

Interesting! Thanks again!

More 3-D Creatures!

3-d artist and all-around cool guy Martin Ocejo agreed to make a quick 3-d model of a creature for me, and this is what I got back! It’s the classic bigheadmouth-thing! He even added the authentic crayon scribbles/smudges. Thanks Martin!
